Residential Black Stained Polished Concrete Floor in Anderson, SC
Two-Tone Gray and Black 800-Grit Polish — Soft-Slab Grout Coat Process
Zachary Daniel Concrete polished and black-stained a residential concrete floor in Anderson, South Carolina to deliver a striking two-tone gray and black finish at 800 grit — a polish so distinctive the homeowner now has a floor that reads like a galaxy underfoot. The slab on this side of the house wasn't perfect when the crew started. It was soft, with pitting, cracks, gouges, and pinholes scattered across the field — the kind of substrate that ruins a polish if you try to grind straight through it.
Pinholes catch shadows during polishing, dull spots show up next to shiny spots, and the finish reads inconsistent and unprofessional. So the ZDC team built in an extra step that most contractors skip: a cementitious grout coat. Rather than a polymer-infused grout that would resist further polishing, the crew used a cementitious grout for its compatibility with the softer slab and the more natural color blend it leaves behind. The team mixed the two-part grout on-site, troweled it across the surface in a thin tight layer, and worked it into every pinhole and crack — like smoothing pancake batter to chase out the air pockets. After the grout cured, the crew came back through with a 50- or 100-grit hybrid puck and cut the grout coat right back off — leaving the slab's surface looking like clean concrete, but with every pinhole sealed and every defect filled. From there it was traditional polishing, multiple passes up through the grits, building the surface smoother and more reflective with each pass — like the way a river stone polishes itself smooth over time.
The team then applied a deep black stain and continued the polish process to bring the finish to 800 grit, where the contrast between the gray base concrete and the black stain develops the depth, character, and almost-cosmic visual energy that gave this floor its galaxy reputation.
