Zachary Daniel Concrete finished 3,800 square feet of new construction concrete at a western leather store in Asheville, North Carolina — a bark brown grind, stain, and seal system that gave the store the warm, saddle-brown floor its brand deserved and proved that even the hardest slabs in new construction can be brought to a finished, decorative standard when the prep work is done right. The slab was a steel trowel finish — one of the hardest concrete surfaces ZDC has worked on, testing harder than a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. A slab that hard doesn't grind easily, and it doesn't forgive shortcuts.

The customer wanted a floor that looked almost polished, but the scope called for a grind, stain, and seal — the right system when a decorative coating is going down rather than a mechanical polish. ZDC's crew ran the slab through four separate grinding steps, working up to the highest grit level appropriate for a coating system, before low spots and honeycombs revealed themselves across the field. Those areas — places where the trowel finish left shallow depressions that wouldn't grind flush in the standard passes — had to be addressed individually with a specialized honeycomb grinder to bring them down level before the stain could go on. With the slab uniformly prepped, the team applied the bark brown stain in two tones — a deep reddish-brown that Zach describes as a saddle brown — building the color in layers across the full 3,800 square feet until the warmth and depth developed evenly from one end of the store to the other. Two coats of urethane top coat sealed the stain for the scratch resistance, chemical resistance, and long-term durability a retail floor making and selling leather goods demands every day.
