Old Epoxy Removed and Replaced With a 400-Grit Midnight Black Polish in an Open Living Area
Zachary Daniel Concrete replaced an uneven epoxy-style floor with a Midnight Black dyed polished concrete floor in the open living area of a home in Landrum, South Carolina, a room built around a brick wood-stove hearth. The old coating had lots of dips, and it had been ground down by hand by another contractor. We removed all of it, made the floor much more consistent, and then installed our polish system with a Midnight Black dye. The floor was polished to 400 grit and finished with a 1500-grit burnishing pad. We stopped at 400 instead of going to 800, 1500, or 3000 grit so the gloss wouldn't be overdone. The living area gets a lot of natural light, and the 400-grit finish keeps the floor livable while still reflecting the windows and lights across the dark surface. Dyeing and staining a polished floor are different: stain brings more mottling and character, while dye gives a more uniform color with the clarity and reflectivity of a true polished floor.
